Besalu

Typical Street The Medieval Festival The Medieval Festival Old Town street Stonework

With a history of being occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, Franks, Moors and French, the medieval town of Besalu was declared a site of National Historical Interest in 1966. Most of the buildings date from a period of independence between the tenth and twelfth century.

Besalu BridgeAn imposing Romanesque bridge which crosses the River Fluvia is the town's most identifiable landmark. It was built in an 'L' shape to utilise the underlying rock structure on the riverbed.

The Romanesque church of St Pere is the last remaining part of the Benedictine Monastery founded in 977AD by Earl-Bishop Miro and consecrated in 1003. Having a sombre facade featuring two lions, the main attraction of the church is it's nave round the main chapel and the 16th to 18th century tombs.

In 1964, a Jewish ritual purification bath (a mikvah), used by men and women before weddings and religious ceremonies, was chanced upon. it is one of just three surviving mikvahs in Europe. it is situated in the old Jewish quarter of the town (called 'Call'). Keys to the Mikvah can be collected from the Besalu Tourist Office and there are also guided tours each day.
