Port Lligat |
Port Lligat is a very small fishing village reached from Roses by
following the signs to Cadaques. It is famous for the house of
surrealist painter Salvador Dali and his wife Gala, which became a
museum in 1997. The journey from Canyelles Petites to Port Lligat
crosses Cap Creus, its geology and landscape being a major influence in
his works. The nearest place to stay is Cadaques. Self catering and hotel accommodation get booked early for each summer, so it is advisable to book the previous year. Port Lligat is a comfortable walk across the headland from Cadaques.
After buying his first waterside cottage in 1932, Dali progressively
bought and extended four adjoining cottages, completing his house and
studios in 1971. Dali's personality is stamped on every room, giving a
great insight into the surrealist artist. The varying layouts of the separate buildings resulted in a labyrinth of rooms, each retaining items (stuffed animals, fabrics, etc) used by the artist.
The House/museum, which is itself a Dali work of art, is open to the
public from March to September, and it is advisable to book (Telephone
+34 972 25 10 15). The multilingual guided tours start at 10 minute
intervals and last around 45 minutes and at the end of the tour you are
free to explore the fascinating garden which has the famous phallic
swimming pool, Pirelli armchair and many other Dali creations. The guided tours are given in most of the major European languages, depending on the nationalities of each small party.
