Walking & Hiking in Catalonia & Costa Brava

Weird rock formations... Amazing views.... Lovely strolls.... Coves inaccessible by car.... On the Cami de Ronda walk
Throughout Catalonia, and in the Cap de Creus Natural Park in particular, one is spoilt for choice by the number of paths, tracks and trails available: Coastal walks, passing coves which are inaccessible by car, and mountain trails with breathtaking views. In between, other paths crisscross the area, making circular walks possible. There is an abundance of flora and forna to be discovered, including wild orchids and huge butterflies plus unique geological features.

Three major footpaths are:

The Cami de Ronda is the old coastguard's trail. Cami de Ronda means 'Patrol Walk' and the term has been adopted by the Catalan Government to name this trail which runs from the French border through Cap de Creus and along the coast to Blanes. The route was neglected for many years but work is now being carried out to reinstate the entire length. The standard of the trail varies enormously - some parts a concreted with steps and handrails, while in other parts progress is arduous with scramble up or down steep, narrow tracks.

The GR11
, which runs west from the Cap de Creus lighthouse, along the Pyrenees and it's footpaths to Andorra. Through the Spanish Pyrenees: A Book, ''Through the Spanish Pyrenees: GR11, a Long Distance Footpath', is the definitive walking guide on the GR11 footpath (a 44 day journey), leaving civilisation for days at a time has plenty of detailed maps

The GR92 is another long-distance route running from the French border to Portbou then turning south and ending in Barcelona.

Walks are colour-coded according to their length:

Some markers are indistinct
Yellow & White - Short walks
Green & White - Medium distance
Red & White - Long distance.

The coloured markers appear as two parallel lines, painted in trees, rocks and posts - the direction of the lines generally points the direction to be taken.

Most tourist offices has details of their local walks - The Roses Office (near the Citadel) provides information on walks which take in many of the monoliths and dolmens in the locality.

The weather can quickly changeSafety:
Northern Catalonia has a temperate and generally kind climate but can experience sudden weather changes. The tramantana (gale force wind) can arrive at any time, even on the calmest of days, and may last a few minutes or a few days. Conversely, what appear ideal summer walking weather with a cool breeze, cloudy skies and relatively low temperatures can quickly become fiercely hot. Therefore suitable clothing for any eventuality should be carried together with a good supply of water and a compass.
For long walks, inform someone of your intended route and anticipated return time. Do not forget to let them know when you have completed the walk!
